In November 2008, for the first time in the history of the United States, an African-American had been elected president. While it is certainly a big step for the American society towards racial equality, it would be rather naive to think that racism is now a problem of the past.
In order to win the elections, Barack Obama had had to secure a number of white votes, but people keep forgetting that he would have lost big time if those had been the only ones that counted.Add to that the fact that the majority of the white people voted for Obama simply because ''things were so bad that they would vote for the other guy(representative of the democrats) even if he was black'', and you will realize that the election of a black man for president had nothing to do with America being ''post-racial''.
A little over a year has passed, and the situation in regard to racism seems to be the same.Recent research shows that while the vast majority of blacks still favors Obama(over 90%), only a relatively small number of whites(around 40%) approves of his performance so far. These results only prove how biased the American society is.In other words, the racial factor still plays a major role in every day life.
Another event that proves racism still exists in the United States is the so called ''Gates Affair''.It happened on July 16,2009, and it involved a black scholar being arrested for disorderly conduct.''The whites interpreted it as another uppity black man sassing a white police officer, threatening law and order and white comfort levels. The blacks, however, interpreted it as a symbol of the ever-lasting harassment of black people by white policemen''.The keyword here is ''interpreted''.In my opinion, the American society is too busy interpreting things that are happening around it, that it fails to see the truth.
Is America post-racial?I think not.And as long as the people spend their time interpreting rather than accepting the reality, racism will hold it's position firmly as one of the biggest issues in the country.

That is a very good point, and one I agree with very much. There is no way that racism has been put behind us, even with President Obama as our incumbent.
